Prior to the establishment of the International Postgraduate Medical College 13-Years ago, there was no opportunity for any dental graduate to pursue postgraduate dental education in the English-speaking Caribbean. With much pride the Faculty of Dentistry of the International Postgraduate Medical College recently graduated two Master’s Degree candidate in Oral Surgery and Medicine and three in Oral Implantology.

All the five Master’s Degree candidates also received the Fellowship of the Faculty of Dentistry if the IPMC by examination. This qualification makes them consultant eligible. It is important that we reach out to our sister colleges from all over the World for the recognition the qualifications that our College has awarded to our postgraduate students.

This is why we are commencing a series of accreditations by older Colleges so as to allow reciprocity and in-depth collaboration.

In 2016/17 academic year when we commenced our specialty programs, we invited the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland who made very remarkable comments and recommendation for our College and also our programs, The RCSI recommended that our College collaborate with the undergraduate Dental program at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica or the University of Technology in Jamaica, so that any collaboration with their College will enjoy a large group of fresh graduates who will commence the MFD training with us.

Today despite not being able to collaborate with the above mentioned Universities due to what I call academic politics, we will be launching our own undergraduate Dental program, We have however proudly tutored three candidates for the various levels of the MFD examination successfully. As the President and CEO of the IPMC, I will ensure that our College approaches the RCSI to make us a center to sit the MFD Examination. I have noticed that this examination was done strictly online during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The beginning of another massive academic step within the growth and development of our College is the accreditation visit to our College by the Faculty of Dentistry of the West African College of Surgeons. I am sure that this accreditation will create avenues for not only collaborations, but avenues for reciprocity.

Because of the undergraduate Medical and Dental School that we are about to begin, we were advised to change our name. This request made our College register the Global College of Medical Science as a subsidiary of the International Postgraduate Medical College.

Due to the recognition of the future needs and challenges the Global University of Medical Sciences (GUMS) is now our name and both the International Postgraduate Medical College and the Global College of Medical Sciences are now subsidiaries of this University.
